Minecraft mobs list – all new and existing monsters

All Minecraft mobs, hostile, friendly or otherwise, that you might come across in your sandbox adventure, from sniffers and squid to skeletons and spiders.

Minecraft mobs foxes

Minecraft mobs are living entities in Minecraft. Short for mobile, these sometimes adorable, sometimes aggressive creatures roam the many biomes of the blocky universe. They will interact and respond to you, other players, and other mobs, whether that’s a zombie literally knocking at your door or the chickens in your backyard coop.

Many aspects make Minecraft one of the best PC games of all time, and its creatures definitely help – be they mythical or real, hostile or friendly. Minecraft mobs are susceptible to the same physics and environmental changes that affect players, such as catching fire or drowning. They can be attacked and killed with weapons, and when killed, they drop resources and experience points, with hostile mobs dropping rarer items on occasion. So, while you can add other mobs with various Minecraft mods, here’s every Minecraft mob available in the vanilla game right now – and announced for the future.

Minecraft mobs: The Minecraft sniffer lies on the ground, having recovered a Torchflower seed

New Minecraft mobs

New mobs appear in Minecraft all the time, with some arriving with new annual content updates and others voted in by fans during the Minecraft Live mob votes. Now that the Minecraft 1.20 release date is here, two new mobs are now officially in the game:

Sniffer

The Sniffer won the 2022 Minecraft Live mob vote, beating out the Copper Golem and Rascal. The Sniffer not only adds a new mob to the sandbox game, but brings the gorgeous, tropical new Torchflower with it, as the ancient creature is able to sniff out old Torchflower seeds from the ground.

Minecraft camels in the desert: a baby and adult camel

Camel

The Minecraft Camel was announced as part of the as-yet-unnamed 1.20 update and actually is in the game right now, sort of. While you won’t come across camels in the desert in any new world, the most recent Java snapshots and Bedrock preview test worlds have a toggle for experimental features, which includes camels!

Minecraft mobs: A black Minecraft sheep walks towards the player, with a white and blue sheep behind it.

Passive Minecraft mobs

Minecraft passive mobs will not attack you and flee when attacked. They can breed, so you’ll see baby animals in the same area. Most passive mobs, such as horses in Minecraft, can be tamed if they’re not already. Then there are the inhabitants of Minecraft villages, like traders and villagers. Other farmyard friends can provide resources, including wool from sheep or milk from cows.

Hostile Minecraft mobs

Hostile mobs in Minecraft are dangerous and aggressive and attack you within a certain range, usually 16 blocks, as long as there’s no obstruction and you are within their line of sight. However, some mobs are capable of detecting you from 100 blocks away. Flying mobs, like a Minecraft Phantom, spawn above and attempt to swoop down and attack you. A boss mob is a special type of hostile with a larger detection range and more health, such as the Minecraft Ender Dragon and the Minecraft Wither.
